Tulum (Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city serving as a major port for Cobá, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is a tourist mecca. I journeyed there in the early 1980s, to interview Mayans and Mexicans about their sightings of the little people, the Alux. (See my and Patrick Huyghe's field guide.)
This Maya site may formerly have been known by the name Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise. Tulum stands on a bluff facing east toward the Caribbean Sea. Tulúm is also the Yucatan Mayan word for fence, wall or trench.
Dawn Name Game
The name Dawn has been in the news lately.
Blast #4 of the Austin, Texas, bombs, taking place on Sunday, March 18, 2018, took place in the 4800 block of Dawn Song Drive.
Also on March 18, an Israeli security guard Adel Kolman was killed by a Palestinian terrorist near the entrance to Lion's Gate in Jerusalem's Old City. The guard was from the West Bank settlement of Kochav Shachar. Shachar means '"dawn" and kochav means "star." The meaning in English is "Dawn Star."
As readers here are rather aware, bizarre accidents, weird crimes and mass violence has touched lives through the names Aurora (which means "dawn") and Dawn.
On March 23, 2018, a family of four were from Creston, Iowa, found mysteriously deceased in a Tulum condo. They may have been dead for 36 to 48 hours. The condo was at Tao, near Akumal, a tourist-friendly beachfront community. Located between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Akumal mean "Land of turtles."
Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41; wife Amy Marie Sharp, 38; Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7, were found dead inside the condo Friday, March 23, 2018, after their immediate family members had reported them missing to local police when the Sharps did not return to the United States on Wednesday as originally planned.
Please note, Kevin and Sterling both have the "classic middle name" of "Wayne" that Weird News' Chuck Shepherd ties to sinister matters.
On March 24, 2018, after autopsies by Mexican authorities, the cause of death was declared to by asphyxiation of toxic gas. “Any violent act or suicide has been discounted,” authorities said.
Aurora means "dawn," and another Aurora has been touched by tragedy.
The Oregon State Police identified a teen who died around 4:00 pm, March 25, 2017, after getting pinned by a log at a Bandon beach, specifically South Jetty Park beach.
Aurora Genai Sheffel, 14, of Eugene died from her injuries after attempts by a Bandon police officer and paramedics to save her life.
Witnesses said the log had rolled over on top of her, and they were able to remove the wood after several attempts. She was rushed by crews to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Sheffel's stepfather, David Wederquist, told the Register-Guard on Sunday, March 26, 2017, that Sheffel and two friends were playing on the log and taking selfies at the start of their spring break. Her friends jumped off, but she did not.
"They were just taking pictures and posing," he told the newspaper.
Her father said Sheffel, a freshman who earned straight As, had recently been selected for North Eugene High School's varsity cheerleading squad.

Catherine Elizabeth Coulson (October 22, 1943 – September 28, 2015) was an American stage and screen actress who worked behind the scenes on various studio features, magazine shows and independent films as well as acting in theater and film since the age of 15. She is best known for her role as Margaret Lanterman, the enigmatic Log Lady, in the David Lynch TV series Twin Peaks, based in the fictional Pacific Northwest location of Twin Peaks, Washington State.
Twin Peaks was broadcast for 18 episodes in 1990-1991. The story began in 1989, logger Pete Martell discovers a naked corpse wrapped in plastic on the bank of a river outside the town of Twin Peaks, Washington. The body is identified as homecoming queen Laura
Palmer.
A reboot of Twin Peaks, in a limited series event, will consist of 18 episodes, premiering on Showtime on May 21, 2017.
On October 1, 2015, at about 10:38 am (local time), a college shooting took place at the Umpqua Community College, in Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon. Reports indicate that at least 10 (perhaps as many as 15) students have died and 20 have been injured. The shooter appeared to have engaged in an exchange of gunfire, been "neutralized" and is dead. The cause of death of the shooter in the deadly rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, was suicide, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said on Saturday, October 3, 2015.
Nine victims were killed, the gunman died by suicide, resulting in ten deaths, and 9 others were injured.

About 3,300 students attend Umqua Community College attend in school there full-time, and more than 16,000 attend on a part-time basis.
ABC News reported that the gunman had three handguns and a long gun.
By 9:00 PM EDT, Thursday, the Umpqua Community College shooter was identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer, law enforcement sources confirm to CBS News, Fox News, NBC News, and other media.
Soon thereafter, the profiling began. He is British-born, his last name is hyphenated because it is both of his parents' surnames, he posts IRA-related images, and more. Chris Harper-Mercer, only two days before the killings, apparently downloaded the documentary Surviving Sandy Hook, as well as in the past the "conspiracy" film Lost Secrets of the Illuminati, and the "occult magazine Phenomena," says the Guardian.
The gunman, reportedly, posted online on September 30th, saying he would be shooting at a school.
A rather weird homophobic remark ["(all homosexual reddit users")] appeared on a brief initial description of the shooting on Umpqua Community College's Wikipedia page:
What does "Umpqua" mean? "Thundering waters" or "across the waters" are two popular translations for this surviving word of the Umpqua language. Another definition is "satisfied" -- as in a full stomach. Source.

In my book, The Copycat Effect (2004), I discussed the Springfield, Oregon shooting, which took place on May 21, 1998. Two students were killed, 22 others wounded in the cafeteria at Thurston High School by 15-year-old Kip Kinkel. His parents were later found dead at home. Also,
On the same day, May 21, 1998, 200 miles due north, at the end of the school day, Miles Fox, 15, a student of Onalaska High School, Onalaska, Washington, took a young woman hostage from his bus to his home, and died by suicide from a shot to his head. As the story aired on radio and television, Ricardo Martin, 15, shot himself with a .38 caliber pistol and died on the campus of Rialto High School, in Rialto, California.
Roseburg had a previous school shooting on February 23, 2006.
Student Vincent Leodoro, 14, walked into Roseburg High School carrying a semi-automatic pistol loaded with hollow-point bullets and shot fellow student Joseph Monti four times in the back while they were in the school courtyard. Monti, then 16, survived.
How is it that we find ourselves here? At this juncture of history, after recent years of writings on red dawns, auroras, beheadings, dark knights, masked men, and tridents, we rush towards an exact moment in time foreshadowed in our nightmares (predestined for madness?) by the Libyan Dawn, the Masked Men Brigade, ISIS, and indirectly, the Rapid Trident exercise.

Decapitations
Beheadings are in the news, thanks to ISIS. And thanks to tabloid journalism. These acts of terror have been placed to the forefront of news reportage for over a decade. They are graphic, individual attacks of terror. The list is growing long.
Are you aware there have been three US/UK decapitations/beheadings in the last few days? (There have been several, historically, needless to say.)
On August 29, 2014, an unidentified man, formerly of Chicago, conducted a self-decapitation (with a cable tied to a tree, wrapped around his neck) in Yorktown, Virginia. Source.
On September 1, 2014, using a similar method - a cable, a wooden pole, and a car - Tomas Rivera, 51, of Port Jervis, New York, decapitated himself in Hunts Point, Bronx, New York. Source.
Both news reports used exactly the same wording that the men "hit the gas" before killing themselves.
An unnamed elderly woman was beheaded in the garden of a north London, UK, house, and her body found on September 4, 2014. Source.
Tragic and horrible, of course. Perhaps the American suicides are related to the copycat suicidal atmosphere in the USA, in the wake of the Robin Williams self-hanging? Perhaps the UK beheading is stimulated by the beheadings in the news of Sotloff and Foley? But is there something more wicked this way coming?
Tripoli International Airport was overtaken by the group Libyan Dawn in August 2014, and now 11 aircraft for Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways are missing.

But the focus on the 11th could be a danger, in and of itself.
This year's Supermoon on September 9th is metaphorically creating a tidal wave of human emotions in ways unimagined. But astronomy is not the key. It is the human elements in play that will cause what we see unfold.
The 13th anniversary of 9/11 is reinforced with the second anniversary of the attack on the American embassy on September 11, 2012, and killing of former Navy SEALS and American diplomats at Benghazi, Libya.
Human behavior forecasting is not a parlor game. It is a real life exercise to attempt to predict real time behaviors (actions, conduct, performance) that call forth protective factors that should be put in place, and prevention measures to employ to keep our friends out of harms' way.
The anniversary syndrome is strong at this time of year. You can actually "feel it in the air," with the changing seasons.
Here are some events tied to incidents in the past that jumped out during my examination of the dates September 9-11:
September 9 ~
1970 – A British airliner is hijacked by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and flown to Dawson's Field (a remote desert airstrip near Zarka, formerly used as a British Royal Air Force base) in Jordan.
2001 – Ahmed Shah Massoud, leader of the Northern Alliance, is assassinated in Afghanistan by two al Qaeda assassins who claimed to be Arab journalists wanting an interview.
2004 – A bomb explodes outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta, killing 10 people.
2012 – A wave of attacks kill more than 108 people and injure 351 others in Iraq.
September 10 ~
1898 – Empress Elizabeth of Austria is assassinated by Luigi Lucheni.
1939 – World War II: The submarine HMS Oxley is mistakenly sunk by the submarine HMS Triton near Norway and becomes the Royal Navy's first loss.
1976 – A British Airways Hawker Siddeley Trident and an Inex-Adria DC-9 collide near Zagreb, Yugoslavia, killing 176.
2000 – Operation Barras successfully frees six British soldiers held captive for over two weeks and contributes to the end of the Sierra Leone Civil War.
2001 – Antonio da Costa Santos, mayor of Campinas, Brazil is assassinated.
2003 – Anna Lindh, the foreign minister of Sweden, is fatally stabbed (assassinated) while shopping, and dies the following day.
September 11 ~
1922 – The British mandate of Palestine begins.
1939 – Iraq and Saudi Arabia declares war on Nazi-Germany.
1968 – Air France Flight 1611 crashes off Nice, France, killing 89 passengers and 6 crew.
1970 – The Dawson's Field hijackers release 88 of their hostages. The remaining hostages, mostly Jewish and Israeli citizens, are held until September 25.
The origins of the Black September movement began with Arafat's clashes with Jordan, intriguingly due to hijacked planes. On September 6-12, 1970, four TWA, Swissair and BOAC planes were hijacked (the El Al one failed), destroyed, and this was directly tied to Palestine civil uprisings and the resulting suppression that was to be called Jordan's "Black September."
1972 – The Munich Summer Olympics end. At this Olympics the "Black September" terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes, on the 5th.
1974 – Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 crashes in Charlotte, North Carolina, killing 69 passengers and two crew.
1976 – A group of Croatian nationalists plant a bomb in a coin locker at Grand Central Terminal. After stating political demands, they reveal the location and provide instructions for disarming the bomb. The disarming operation is not executed properly, killing one NYPD bomb squad specialist.
1994 – A private plane attempts to crash into the White House.
2001 – Two hijacked aircraft crash into the World Trade Center in New York City, while a third smashes into The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in a series of coordinated suicide attacks by 19 members of al-Qaeda. Altogether, 2,996 people are killed.
2003 – Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh dies from her assassination stabbing of the previous day.
2012 – The U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya is attacked, resulting in four deaths. U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Information Officer Sean Smith, and CIA contractors and former Navy SEALS Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were killed during the series of raids, commencing at nightfall and continuing into the next morning.

There is something special about the number 11 to terrorists, no doubt about it. Such incidents as the 3/11 [2005] Madrid, 7/11 [2006] Mumbai, and 9/11 [2001] terrorist attacks serve as misnamed “celebrity events” that become models copied by other Islamic extremists.
Pakistani Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, the alleged Al-Qaeda mastermind behind the first World Trade Center bombing, was quoted as saying after the failed 1993 attempt that they would do it right the second time. He was also the brains behind the elaborate Bojinka, translated as “the explosion.” This was a plot to place bombs on 11 American jetliners and have them all explode on the same day, over the Pacific Ocean.
Yousef carried out a test run for Bojinka by planting a bomb that detonated on Philippines Airlines Flight 434, on December 11, 1994. One tourist was killed, ten injured. Yousef called the Associated Press after this bombing, to give credit to Abu Sayyaf. His friend Khalid Sheik Mohammed would launch the deadly September 11 terrorist attacks, which were built from parts of Operation Bojinka.
It does not seem to be a coincidence that the first airliner to crash into the Twin Towers (a symbolic 11) was American Airlines (AA = 11) Flight 11.
The flight number for the American Airlines plane that crashed into the Pentagon was 77.
September 11th is not to be ignored. But is there a growing "danger zone" around that date now?
For this September 2014, avoid letting your guard down on the 9th and 10th, just because you know you should be on alert on the 11th. Also, realign the hot spots of awareness from land-based sites, and think outside the box. While watching Iraq, Syria, and Ukraine, be careful of soft symbolic targets linked to those that are identified with, for example, the U.S. Navy (tridents), political figures (dark knights/assassinations), and auroras (red dawn attacks).
A storm is coming. The Dark Knight still rises. We are at a concurrence of circumstances that will be revealed, soon enough. It is up to you to prevent them. Yes, you. Be alert, be safe, and be proactive.

Dawn Nguyen is being charged with the false declarations she made when she purchases the AR-15 semiautomatic (Bushmaster) rifle and the 12-gauge shotgun that Spengler had with him Monday when firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were gunned down. A handgun Spengler also had is not linked to the killings. Spengler's missing and presumed killed sister would bring the death toll to 5 for the Webster event. Spengler shot himself.

The beginning of the chaos in the film The Dark Knight Rises begins at the professional football field, with star player wearing "86," running with the ball in front of the collapsing field. Earlier, a youthful fan was shown with an "86" on his shirt too. (This movie, of course, is the one tied to the Aurora mass shooting.)

Last Halloween, who could have predicted that one of the words that we almost certainly would hear at this year's Presidential Debate would be Aurora?
Today, Aurora connects the human consciousness and the unconscious to so much. Mass shooting. July 20th. The Dark Knight Rises. Bane. Bain. James Eagan Holmes. "I am the Joker." Media. Wall-to-wall coverage. Movie theaters. Fear. Twelve Dead. Seventy shot. Darkness. Midnight showing. Colorado. Aurora. Blood. Red. Dawn.
Will the subject of mass shootings or gun control come up during the 2012 Presidential Debate in Denver, Colorado?
If it does, you can almost predict the wording that will be presented to the candidates:
"We find ourselves here tonight at the University of Denver in Colorado. Right down the road, in Aurora, in July, a dozen of our fellow citizens' lives were lost to what appears to have been the act of an alleged lone gunman [or substitute "madman"]. Something similar also happened near here before, at Columbine. What is your position on how we can best stop these shootings?"
After all, this first debate is in Colorado, in Denver. How can they ignore what happened near there on July 20, 2012? Or on April 20, 1999?

Indeed, the pressure was on this week to address Aurora during the debate.
A man wounded in the theater shooting, Stephen Barton, appears in a television ad that will air nationally this week in which he asks the candidates to explain how they would reduce gun violence.
"I never thought I'd be a shooting victim until I was bleeding on a floor in Aurora," Barton said in a statement. "I was lucky, but I've seen what happens when dangerous people get their hands on guns. And I think it's fair to ask the men who want to lead the country to get past the platitudes and give us a serious plan to address a serious problem." Source.
Meanwhile, the relatives of eight of the 12 victims who died at The Dark Knight Rises screening in Aurora, Colorado, asked Jim Lehrer, the moderator of the presidential debate in Denver Wednesday, to ask the candidates about gun violence.
"Hey, didn't they have this debate in Colorado because of the Aurora shootings," some people ask?
Or, "Was it because Colorado has turned into a swing state?"
Intriguingly, Colorado was picked as the site of the first 2012 Presidential Election Debates some time ago.
How long ago?
Actually, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates first announced, on the highly symbolic date of Halloween, October 31, 2011, that four sites had been picked.
Here are those four locations, dates, and topics:
First Presidential (domestic policy) Wednesday, October 3; Magness Arena, University of Denver, Denver, Colorado;
Vice Presidential (domestic and foreign) Thursday, October 11; Norton Center for the Arts, Centre College, Danville, Kentucky;
Second Presidential (town-meeting format) Tuesday, October 16; David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York;
Third Presidential (foreign policy) Monday, October 22; Wold Performing Arts Center, Lynn University, Boca Raton, Florida.
The sites were selected to give some geographic representation to the debate choices. Any other reason is "purely coincidental," we are told.
Is it just synchromystic that Aurora is so close to the first debate at the Magness Arena?
Magness? Magness has its origins in magnus, the word for great and dean. The Magness Arena is named after cable television pioneer Bob Magness, who donated $10 million towards construction costs. Bob Magness, 72, who ran a tiny cable television company out of his kitchen before building Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) into the nation's largest cable provider, died of cancer in November 1996 in Denver. He had created his first cable system 40 years ago in Memphis, Texas, then merged his cable provider Community Television Inc. and its microwave distribution partnership, Western Microwave Inc., to create TCI when he moved to Denver in 1968. The company now has 14 million subscribers nationwide.
His billionaire son is Gary Magness, who owned TCI until it merged with AT&T in 1999 in a $54 billion deal. Gary has inherited hundreds of millions of dollars in stock. He owns water rights in Colorado through ranch holdings; also invests in oil, gas, and cattle. Gary and his wife produced the film Precious.
The Magness Arena can be identified around the city of Denver by the attached 215-foot-tall (66 m), gold-spired Williams Tower, which contains a 65-bell carillon.
How far is it from the University of Denver's Magness Arena, at 2201 East Asbury Avenue, Denver, CO 80208, to Theater 9, Century 16 Cinemas, at 14300 East Alameda Avenue, Aurora, CO 80012? It's 9 miles, as the crow flies, but 10-13.3 miles, depending on your travel route (back way along East Alameda vs major highways I-25/I-255) there.
This leaves an obvious question to ask ourselves: Was it the Cosmic Joker that picked Colorado'sAurora to dominate the news for this Summer of the Gun, or was it something more human and wicked that this way came to choose this specific Denver-Aurora area for these red dawn events?
Why was Aurora "picked"?
Will the word Aurora be heard at the October 3rd debate? Our forecast is, "Yes."
"The fire rises!" ~ Bane, The Dark Knight Rises, 2012.
A mass shooting occurred on July 20, 2012, at a midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, leaving 12 dead and 58 injured (some gravely), 15 minutes after the film began. The active shooting took place in Theater No. 9 at the Century 16 Movie Theaters, located at 14300 East Alameda Avenue in Aurora, Colorado. (News reports have said as high as 15 are dead, but as of 8:00 AM Eastern, CNN is reporting 12 have been killed. Double-counting caused the 15 count.)
The suspect (shown at top; TMZ discovered the colored-hair image) has been identified as recent Aurora resident James Eagan Holmes (born December 13, 1987), according to federal authorities. His parents live in San Diego. Spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery says 24-year-old James Holmes was a doctoral student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver until last month. She did not know when he started school or why he withdrew. He apparently was a former biology (neuroscience) student in southern California.
Early on the morning of Friday, July 20, 2012, mountain time, at least 50 people were injured, twelve were killed, in a shooting at an Aurora, Colorado movie theater, as the new Batman movie screened. The number was confirmed by Police Chief Dan Oates.
A 24-year-old suspect is in custody, Oates told reporters. "We don't have any evidence of a second gunman," he said.
Brenda Stuart, of 850 KOA radio, said that "a lot of people thought the gunshots were part of the movie. They heard what they thought were firecrackers. Then they saw the bullets flying."
Eyewitnesses reported the assailant appeared to be wearing a gas mask, body armor, similar to how the film's villain Bane did too. Witnesses say the suspect was dressed all in black, with a riot helmet, goggles, and a gas mask. Tear gas went off in the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center following the gunfire. Reports indicated bullets had passed from one theater into an adjoining one.
Police reported during the afternoon that Holmes did not look like Bane, after all. He first identified himself as "I am the Joker," and had his head and goatee hair painted red and did, somewhat, resemble (perhaps? under his body armor?) the Joker during attack.
The shooting scene was hectic. Three area hospitals were receiving victims, and police at the scene were taking victims to hospitals in their cars, not just waiting for ambulances. Nicole Williams, with the Swedish Medical Center of Englewood, Colorado, told KUSA-Denver the hospital was alerted to a mass-casualty incident at 1:15 a.m. local time Friday (3:15 a.m. ET).
The suspect James Holmes was arrested at the back of the theater, near a car (with Tennessee plates), with a gas mark, two handguns, an "AK-type" firearm and a shotgun.
The suspect James Holmes made statements that he had explosives at his apartment, which is located at Paris Street and 17th Avenue in North Aurora. A bomb squad was on site. There are reports this location is booby-trapped.

The shooting at the food court at the Eaton Centre mall, in Toronto, Canada, took place on Saturday evening, June 02, 2012. Several people were wounded. Media accounts told of one dead, and seven wounded. One high profile witness was Blue Jays 3B Brett Lawrie. One of the dead victims of the Aurora shooting has turned out to be Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sportscaster, who happened to almost have been shot during the Eaton shooting. Her immediate pre-The Dark Knight Risestweets have been published.
A six-year-old is said to be among the fatalities.

The name Aurora means "dawn." The Roman goddess of the dawn was named Aurora, and her siblings are Sol (Sun) and Luna (Moon). These names in Latin and Greek are Aurora/Eos, Sol/Helios, Luna/Selene.
Anne Hathaway/Catwoman's public persona character in The Dark Knight Rises is named Selene Kyle (Selene = Moon, Kyle = Strait of Water/River).
Aurora is an extremely popular name in Norway, being the 16th most used in 2006.
Aurora is a suburb less than 10 miles east of downtown Denver. Aurora originated in the 1880s as the town of Fletcher, taking its name from Denver businessman Donald Fletcher, who saw it as a real estate opportunity. He and his partners staked out four square miles east of Denver, but the town - and Colorado - struggled mightily after the Silver Crash of 1893. At that point Fletcher skipped town, leaving the community with a huge water debt. Inhabitants decided to rename the town Aurora in 1907, after one of the subdivisions composing the town.
Colorado is of Spanish origin, meaning "colored red" and "ruddy."
The memories of Columbine (20 miles away from Aurora) are being recalled by the Colorado and other media.
The Aurora name is familiar to investigators of the unexplained due to the the Aurora, Texas, Airship incident that reportedly occurred on April 17, 1897, in Aurora, Texas, a small town in the northwest corner of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The incident (similar to the more famous Roswell UFO incident 50 years later) allegedly resulted in a fatality from the crash. The alleged alien body is reportedly buried in an unmarked grave at the local Aurora cemetery.
The suspect's name translates as James = "he who supplants," Eagan = "fiery," and Holmes = "holly" and/or "island in the river."

Personal Note
Why am I up this early, as Willie Geist often asks, specifically reporting on this event? Well, I was startled from my sleep, at 4:27 am Eastern, on this morning of July 20th, by what sounded like someone calling my name; I literally thought there was a person in my bedroom. Then I checked the news and heard about the Aurora shooting. I have never had such a startling awakening. Yes, I am open to Forteana, but I do not consider myself involved in psychic phenomena, per se, so this was an unusual personal incident for me.
