The Ortolan Connection at the Golden Globes

The 76th Golden Globes took a bizarre detour into the world of wealthy twilight signaling and secret societies in 2019.

(Warning: Graphic Material: Speculative Conspiracy Theory: Ritualistic American Folklore)

It all kicked into full gear with the flacid humor of Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh when they did a strange supposedly funny skit.

Prior to a commercial break, Samberg announced, “Normally at this point of the show, the host would do something fun and spontaneous to show how we’re all just ordinary people, like ordering pizza for everyone.” Source.
Pizza. What immediately came to your mind?

Pizzagate, the rich and famous, Hollywood, Hollyweird. What was Andy Samberg thinking making this joke?

Who doesn't know about Pizzagate?

In summary, Pizzagate is a conspiracy that became widely discussed, especially by pro-Trump online sites, during the United States presidential election cycle in 2016.
In the fall of 2016, the personal email account of John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign manager, was hacked in a spear-phishing attack, and his emails were subsequently made public by WikiLeaks. Proponents of the Pizzagate conspiracy theory falsely claimed that the emails contained coded messages referring to human trafficking and connecting several U.S. restaurants and high-ranking officials of the Democratic Party with an alleged child sex ring involving the Washington, D.C. restaurant Comet Ping Pong. Source.

I've discussed the Pizzagate shooting at the Comet pizza house here (December 5, 2016).

Numerous emails from the Chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign incongruously refer to food items such as pasta, cheese pizza, ice cream – which 4chan users say is a code language used by child sex ring participants:
For anyone who hasn’t been paying attention, the elite are heavily into pedophilia and satanism because these are ways for them to (1) prove they are sociopathic enough to be trusted with great crimes, and (2) prove that they can trust each other, despite being sociopaths. They all have the dirt on each other. (4) Satanic ritual abuse is used to create controllable split personalities, like in the Manchurian Candidate....
“hotdog” = boy
“pizza” = girl
“cheese” = little girl
“pasta” = little boy
“ice cream” = male prostitute
“walnut” = person of colour
“map” = semen
“sauce” = orgy
Source.

Of course, Pizzagate is said to be a code for a deeper mystery of secret societies, as shown by Stanley Kubrick in Eyes Wide Shut.

Cryptokubruology haunted the Golden Globes.

Supposedly a message about the oceans and the environment has been seen also as this:

Flu Shots

Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, after their brief "pizza" mention, then they went on to their flu gag.

Keith Urban registers disgust. That's Nicole Kidman next to him.

Yes, Kidman is Urban's wife (2006-Present), and formerly Tom Cruise's wife (1990-2001). She starred with Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut (1999).

Although it was a stunt that backfired, worse yet, it seemed to have an entire twilight language layer missed by some.

As People put it, in part:
During Sunday night’s glamorous event, hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg paused the awards ceremony to give out something else: flu shots.
“So roll up your sleeves, Hollywood, because you’re all getting flu shots,” Oh excitedly announced, as Samberg joined in, before a large group of people wearing white lab coats and holding syringes appeared on stage.
“You know you wore a sleeveless gown for a reason!” joked Oh, as stars were approached by the white coats and needles, looking understandably freaked out.
“From the Rite Aid at Echo Park,” added Samberg, before noting, “If you are an anti-vaxxer, just put a napkin on — perhaps over — your head and we will skip you.”
BTW, Echo Park, right next to Elysian Park, is the birthplace of LA's first cinematic boom (at 1712 Glendale Blvd, in 1912, via Mack Sennett and his Keystone Cops comedies).

In 1892, Edward Doheny and his fellow prospector Charles A. Canfield discovered LA’s first oil field at Glendale, Colton, and Patton streets, around the corner from where the Bob Baker Marionette Theater now stands. The oil field extended through all of Echo Park, so exploratory prospectors were constantly drilling in search of new opportunities to strike it rich. As a result, excessive amounts of petroleum leaked into the man-made lake (it was originally built in 1870 to be a drinking water reservoir) and in 1907 the lake caught fire and burned for three days — or so legend has it.
This was well before Doheny took part in the Teapot Dome scandal — which served as the basis of Upton Sinclair’s Oil and Paul Thomas Anderson’s magnum opus There Will Be Blood— so Doheny was fairly unknown at the time. Political corruption had yet to ensnare his image. He and Canfield were merely young prospectors looking to make their lives and fortunes in the expansive West. What did it matter that their unregulated prospecting led to rampant speculative drilling and man-made environmental hazards? Oh, right, because it’s the same tactics and mythology of righteous unmitigated greed that have led us to today. Source.

Napkins and Ortolans

Who puts a "napkin on your head"?

Wealthy people eating ortolans do.

A frequently noted way of describing "a single ortolan bird" is to say it is "no bigger than a baby's fist and weighs less than an ounce." This exact description is found, for example, in a 2014 Telegraph article, a 2015 book The Tudor Kitchen, a 2017 Jon H. M. Chan essay, and a 2017 Arabian Post article. It does not seem to be a coincidence that the cooked ortolan is compared to the clenched fist of an infant.

A metaphor for pedophilia?

The birds [ortolan, Emberiza hortulana] are caught with nets set during their autumn migratory flight to Africa. They are then kept in covered cages or boxes. The birds react to the dark cage by gorging themselves on grain, usually millet seed, until they double their bulk. Roman Emperors stabbed out ortolans’ eyes in order to make the birds think it was night, making them eat even more. The birds are then thrown into a container of Armagnac, which both drowns and marinates the birds.
The bird is roasted for eight minutes and then plucked. The consumer then places the bird feet first into their mouth while holding onto the bird's head. The ortolan is then eaten whole, with or without the head and the consumer spits out the larger bones. The traditional way French gourmands eat ortolans is to cover their heads and face with a large napkin or towel while consuming the bird. The purpose of the towel is debated. Some claim it is to retain the maximum aroma with the flavour as they consume the entire bird at once, others have stated "Tradition dictates that this is to shield – from God’s eyes – the shame of such a decadent and disgraceful act", and others have suggested the towel hides the consumers spitting out bones. This use of the towel was begun by a priest, a friend of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. Wikipedia.

About 30,000 ortolan are still captured and sold illegally in the South of France, with a single bird going for $180, or about the price of an ounce of coveted white truffles. The New York Times

Secret gatherings featuring the elusive meal have been documented. In 2008, Esquire writer Michael Paterniti attended one such French dinner that served ortolan — the chef, who was breaking the law, "had to call forty of his friends in search of the bird, for there were none to be found and almost everyone feared getting caught, risking fines and possible imprisonment," Source.
Author and TV personality Anthony Bourdain describes his own ortolan experience; the bird, smuggled into New York, was served at a private dinner.

I bring my molars down and through my bird's rib cage with a wet crunch and am rewarded with a scalding hot rush of burning fat and guts down my throat. Rarely have pain and delight combined so well. I'm giddily uncomfortable, breathing in short, controlled gasps as I continue slowly – ever so slowly – to chew. With every bite, as the thin bones and layers of fat, meat, skin, and organs compact in on themselves, there are sublime dribbles of varied and wondrous ancient flavors: figs, Armagnac, dark flesh slightly infused with the salty taste of my own blood as my mouth is pricked by the sharp bones. As I swallow, I draw in the head and beak, which, until now, have been hanging from my lips, and blithely crush the skull. ~ Anthony Bourdain, Medium Raw, 2010.

“Zoophagy” is an obscure word that means the eating of animals. It might help if we were to appropriate its adjectival form “zoophagous” to describe the eating of endangered species, still a worldwide problem. When it came to their defining moment, Anthony Bourdain, and his French-chef pals, chose their art over respect for nature, always a poor choice. ~ Henry Voigt, July 15, 2011
In 2018...

the bird has taken wing on the small screen in Showtime’s Billions and HBO’s Succession. Both shows offer clear perspectives on (male) obsession, ambition, and excess. Both invoke the same ritual of shrouds, gluttony, and shame. Source.

Cryptokubrology

The Golden Globes reeked of a mix of Stanley Kubrick syncs and Eyes Wide Shut moments.

Christian/Bale/Baal/Satan

The most unforgettable moment, as mentioned in the following MSM headline of the night for the Golden Globes, was owned by Christian Bale, hands down. Even the Drudge Report had to highlight it.

On this blog, on January 1st, I had noted the remarkable placement of Bale in the current visual melodrama of Trump in the Yankee and Cowboy War of 2019.

Tom Cruise: 33° of Separation

Sometimes Perez Hilton gets it, even though how he stumbles into it seems a wonder to behold. Let's take the case of Tom Cruise and his now forthcoming divorce from Katie Holmes. We don't have any choice but to do a bit of synchromystic, Fortean detective work about this seemingly tabloid story. There is more here than meets the eye. First, here is the splashy news.

Not burying the lead at all, Hilton penned a short alert over the weekend, entitled "Tom Cruise Marriages End When Wives Are 33, Scientology Established On 33rd Parallel!"

Tom Cruise has had three wives. Hilton states it quickly and factually that Cruise,
wed MiMi Rogers in May of 1987, but they broke up in 1990… when she was 33. Then he moved on with Nicole Kidman. They were happy for ten years but guess what! They split when she was 33 too! And now, just a day after her divorce announcement, Katie Holmes has 33 years under her belt.
Perez Hilton, however, missed at least one.
Cruise had a relationship with his Risky Business co-star Rebecca de Mornay; they cohabited in New York from 1983 through 1985. She was born in 1952 (the daughter of Jane Eager and Hot Seat talk show host Wally George, who was copycatted by Jerry Springer and others following its 1983 creation). De Mornay was 33 when she broke up with Cruise in 1985!!!
Cruise also had a relationship with Penelope Cruz that ended in 2004. She would have been 31 years old (unless she's lying about her age in her official bios, which she denies going to do in the future).

Tom Cruise's birthday is July 3, and he will be exactly 50 years old this year.

Two other well-known actors are born exactly on the same day (July 3, 1962) as Tom Cruise:
Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) on Criminal Minds.

Synchromystically, Gibson made his big-screen debut as Tom Cruise's nemesis and chief rival for Nicole Kidman’s affections in Far and Away, Ron Howard’s 1992 epic about Irish immigrants settling in the New World.

Dr. Taylor Hayes (Hunter Tylo) on The Bold and The Beautiful.

It does seem to be beyond a coincidence that Cruise would experience breakups with four women in their 33rd year of life. What's going on here?
"Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, maybe even evil, about these people."
~ Tweeted from Rupert Murdoch, Sunday, July 1, 2012.
Perez Hilton relates the significance of "33," in some unexplained fashion, to Cruise's love of Scientology, saying he found that
the Hubbard Association of Scientologists, the forerunner of the Church of Scientology, was established in Phoenix, Arizona. And Phoenix lies on the 33rd parallel. Hmm…
The godfather of synchromysticism James Shelby Downard first made many of us aware of the significance of the number 33 and its specific magic along the 33rd parallel, in 1979, via the short underground classic, The Masonic Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. It has a lot to do with the 33rd degree of Freemasonry, apparently.

Downard's “King-Kill/33: Masonic Symbolism in the Assassination of John F. Kennedy” eventually was published by Ritual America's Adam Parfrey as a chapter in the first edition of the book Apocalypse Culture. A shortcut spoiler is that the essay theorizes the Freemasons were responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in a specific ritual related to "killing the King."
Jim Brandon, writing even before Downard's work was published, was able to walk a wonderfully skeptical open-minded fence, as he passed along the following summary of Downard's JFK insights in Weird America in 1978:
Would you believe John F. Kennedy as a ceremonial king-who-must-die? I'm afraid there is a certain body of opinion, undoubtedly the farthest-out brain wave of assassinology yet, that maintains the killing was pulled off, not by the Russians, the Cubans, the CIA, or the Mafia, but by alchemists.
As I understand the hypothesis, President Kennedy was for some reason chosen as The King (remember "Camelot," "Macbird" and all that?) after the fashion of James G. Frazer and Mary Renault whose "The King Must Die" he had been given to read before his death. This killing of the king in Dallas was related somehow to the touching off of the world's first atomic bomb at the Trinity Site in New Mexico 18 years earlier. Apparently the Bomb was the "destruction of primordial matter" stage of the grand alchemical working, but these conspiracy buffs aren't much more specific on details than were the early alchemists in their recipes. Anyway, Kennedy represented the next stage of the process - the "Death of the White King" - when he was immolated on a trinity site of his own. For, aren't Dealey Plaza and the ill-famed Triple Underpass on the bank of the old Trinity River?
~ Jim Brandon
Popular cultural outlets, such as Robert Anton Wilson's works (e.g. Cosmic Trigger), the music of Marilyn Manson (e.g. King Kill 33), and the various books and movies about the numbers 23 and 33, have Downard's insights influencing a broader audience. My own books, including The Copycat Effect, show the readers various purple shades of Downard.

Developing from this, then, is that severals writers have the sense they "discovered" the significance of certain names or dates, or even factoids like Dealey Plaza being near the 33° north latitude and it being the first Masonic temple in Texas. Remarkably, most of the hints to these revelations track directly back to Downard.

Downard showed clearly the linkages between the mystical landscape and the 33° latitude. Intriguingly, more awareness of the Fayette Factor seems in play than any longterm knowledge of the 33° parallel or of 33 as a harmonic digit. More people follow the 23 "coincidences," in the numbers arena than they do "33."

But this might change. Jim Brandon penned the following thoughts in his 1983 book, The Rebirth of Pan: Hidden Faces of the American Earth Spirit: "...there are certain numbers entangled with certain phenomena...."

The top numerical candidate, coming into its own, has to be 33.

Thirty-three turns up in some remarkable places.

The unnatural nature of the 33° alignments is well-discussed in the synchromystic world. See, for example, the wild and weird, from Red Ice Creation's "Along the 33rd Parallel: A Global Mystery Circle" to Scoreboard Canada's "The 33rd Parallel: Masonic Line of Death...." and Hidden Mysteries' "Masons and Mystery at the 33rd Parallel."

All kinds of associations have been made with the 33rd Parallel: pyramids, death rows, ufo crash sites, Trinity Atomic Bomb test site, the starting site of the Scottish Rite in America, the first shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter, and various assassination-assassination attempt locations (from Jesus to JFK & RFK, from Captain William Morgan to Gabrielle Giffords). Why should we be surprised by the Tom Cruise-Scientology 33rd degree speculations? Some of the linkages do have a basis in popular cultural fact.
Take for instance, the name "Hobbs," which is a "devil's name," a word based on a demonic origin. Hobbs had been the location of UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s. Hobbs, New Mexico, near the 33 degree latitude, has experienced a never-ending stream of UFO encounters since Bill Watson's April 1955 sighting became known in ufology as the "Hobbs Incident." This Southwest corner of New Mexico is a hotbed of so-called flying saucer activity with the most famous event being the "Roswell Incident." Allegedly, as is well-known today, a UFO crashed in nearby Roswell, New Mexico, on July 8, 1947, and the US Air Force recovered small bodies from the craft, according to numerous ufological researchers. The entire use of the term "little green men" appears to have been added to American slang by way of the incidents taking place in the Hobbs-Roswell area in 1947.
Trinity Site Obelisk - National Historical Landmark
Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear device. This test was conducted by the United States Army on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto ("single day's journey of the dead man") desert about 35 miles southeast of Socorro, New Mexico (site of Lonnie Zamora CEIII 1964 incident - pictured) at the White Sands Proving Ground; Trinity took place on the 33rd Parallel. Considering the background to the name "Hobbs," such events are not too shocking.

Perez Hilton is on to something, no matter how sensational people might think his "news." The word "synchromysticism" was first coined by Jake Kotze in August 2006, on his website-at-the-time, Brave New World Order. Kotze defined the concept as: "The art of realizing meaningful coincidence in the seemingly mundane with mystical or esoteric significance." Who are we to deny the fact these things come to us in all kinds of different ways?

In the wake of James Shelby Downard, are we now to understand that Tom Cruise and Scientology have realized the synchromystical magic of the number 33 and the 33° latitude? Ah, The Master is on its way! All shall be revealed, in the coming months, humm?

Hemingway & Gellhorn: War and Love

by Loren Coleman ©2012

As soon as the new HBO film, Philip Kaufman's Hemingway & Gellhorn began, I knew I was visually going to enjoy this experience.

Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn, 1940.

To view this television movie, which did not seem like a small screen offering, is to travel back in time, in grays, sepias, and midcentury mosaics. The movie manifests itself as a sensory marvel.

Today's media are fixated on talking about the blindingly passionate nude scenes between Ernest Hemingway (played by Clive Owen) and Martha Gellhorn (played by Nicole Kidman). Sure, it happens as bombs go off all around them in her Madrid bed, during the Spanish Civil War. Yes, those are great minutes, to view, to take in for their pure energy, irony, and humor. But there was something else that captured my attention from the beginning, which almost sounds like one of the carefully placed clichés you hear throughout this film. Hemingway & Gellhorn demonstrates a remarkable appreciation of the minor minutia that enhanced the canvas capturing the lives of these two romantic figures.

What I remember seeing first was the incredible detail given to the eyes of the aged Martha Gellhorn. The whites of her eyes were bloodshot, as I've seen in aged writers I've known. I was surprised but somewhat expected that.  What I focussed on immediately after noticing the eyes themselves was what I saw when Kidman's eyelids naturally flicked closed for a microsecond, opened, and then would do it again, a few moments later. There was a reddish line of broken blood vessels at the edge of the lid, near the lashes. It wasn't ghoulishly overdone, as if someone had gone overboard with make-up on Kidman's elderly character. Instead, it appeared totally natural and set the stage for me to view and absorb this film, seriously. It was done on a subliminal level that appeared, literally, to counterbalance the supraliminal stimuli of Hemingway's usually overbearing life story.

The film was peppered with those kinds of moments for me.

Seeing Hemingway standing while typing or hearing him constantly calling Martha Gellhorn, "Gellhorn," were the glue that binds this film to an era. They lived in the 1940s, and that was the way it was then. Hemingway & Gellhorn painted that picture well. Another vivid image I literally loved and jumped out of my seat as I viewed it was the brief ones of the huge murals on the walls in Cuba. The war scenes were gritty; the drinking was heavy; the lovemaking was realistic. The concentration sequences were visually disturbing. I was shocked that even though I had seen Dachau images often, I found myself turning away from this horror when viewed through Gellhorn's eyes. These are the finely crafted seemingly small elements that added an unconscious richness to this movie that may only sink in during the coming days.

There is a scene that stands out for me. I will forever recall it as so pure, so true, and so real between this film's Gellhorn and Hemingway. It is the one where they are left sitting in the Chinese cave, after the fighters have rushed out, leaving the two alone. The interchange was intensively electric, distancing, combative, tender, and merging, so much so, that it was familiar. I've lived those moments, as a writer, with women I've loved, and Kidman, Owen, and Kaufman really got it.

I learned a great deal from the movie about Gellhorn that I never knew before. I aquired more about Hemingway's linkages and connections, which I had overlooked. The film should open the world's eyes to the greatness that lived in Martha Gellhorn.

I was constantly startled, as I watched the film, about the lacuna in my knowledge about this amazing woman. (While I'm a minor Hemingway historian, I never grew to know Gellhorn in the way this film was able to flesh her out for me. I have researched and discussed the Hemingway family history of depression, suicide, and copycat behavior. It is something that is sometimes called the "Hemingway Curse." I've appeared in documentary programming discussing it, most significantly on the September 27, 1996, episode of NBC's Unsolved Mysteries, which dealt with Ernest's granddaughter Margaux's then-recent Santa Monica suicide. I also wrote about the so-called "curse" in my 2004 book, The Copycat Effect.) How had I missed Gellhorn? Thank you, HBO.

Of course, there is one other defining event, for me, that the movie decided, perhaps correctly, to leave out. Martha Gellhorn, who never wished to be a mere footnote to Hemingway, left this world the same way Hemingway did, up to a point. Gellhorn, 89, died by suicide from a drug overdose, on the day after Valentine's Day in 1998, in London. Valentine's Day is a hard day for passionate lovers and emotional ex-lovers. She was nearly blind and had been battling cancer. Less than 20 months previously, Margaux Hemingway had died by suicide by drug overdose, her body being found the day before the 35th anniversary of Ernest Hemingway's suicide. His impact on others was great. In life and death.

If we learn of Gellhorn's legacy by way of this movie, and understand her death differently than Hemingway's, we shall honor her new-found memory properly.

Slow down. Take the time. Watch Hemingway & Gellhorn. It is playing all Spring on HBO.
