Tulum/Zama: Dawn Again

Tulum (Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city serving as a major port for Cobá, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is a tourist mecca. I journeyed there in the early 1980s, to interview Mayans and Mexicans about their sightings of the little people, the Alux. (See my and Patrick Huyghe's field guide.)

This Maya site may formerly have been known by the name Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise. Tulum stands on a bluff facing east toward the Caribbean Sea. Tulúm is also the Yucatan Mayan word for fence, wall or trench.

Dawn Name Game

The name Dawn has been in the news lately.

Blast #4 of the Austin, Texas, bombs, taking place on Sunday, March 18, 2018, took place in the 4800 block of Dawn Song Drive

Also on March 18, an Israeli security guard Adel Kolman was killed by a Palestinian terrorist near the entrance to Lion's Gate in Jerusalem's Old City. The guard was from the West Bank settlement of Kochav Shachar. Shachar means '"dawn" and kochav means "star." The meaning in English is "Dawn Star."

As readers here are rather aware, bizarre accidents, weird crimes and mass violence has touched lives through the names Aurora (which means "dawn") and Dawn.

Some recent Aurora examples are:

Aurora Genai Sheffel, March 25, 2017. Crushed by a log.

Aurora Buol-Smith, March 5, 2017. Her son, who said he was a werewolf, stabbed his mother, whom he said was a vampire, to death.

Aurora Avenue, Urbandale, IA, November 2, 2016. Two police officers are gunned down.

Of course, my many examinations of this thread go back to "Aurora: Synchromystic Wonderland" and "Red Dawn Again" in July 2012.

Zama/Tulum

On March 23, 2018, a family of four were from Creston, Iowa, found mysteriously deceased in a Tulum condo.  They may have been dead for 36 to 48 hours. The condo was at Tao, near Akumal, a tourist-friendly beachfront community. Located between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Akumal mean "Land of turtles."

Kevin Wayne Sharp, 41; wife Amy Marie Sharp, 38; Sterling Wayne Sharp, 12, and Adrianna Marie Sharp, 7, were found dead inside the condo Friday, March 23, 2018, after their immediate family members had reported them missing to local police when the Sharps did not return to the United States on Wednesday as originally planned.

Please note, Kevin and Sterling both have the "classic middle name" of "Wayne" that Weird News' Chuck Shepherd ties to sinister matters.

On March 24, 2018, after autopsies by Mexican authorities, the cause of death was declared to by asphyxiation of toxic gas. “Any violent act or suicide has been discounted,” authorities said.

Wayne Williams, 33

Wayne Williams

W W

23 23

A business dispute between a Finks bikie (Australian jargon for a motorcycle gang member) and a group of brothers is believed to have been the catalyst for a siege in southwest Sydney, Australia, that ended with two men shot dead and two others injured on March 7, 2016. (In the USA, that day is National Cereal Day.)

Three other hostages escaped unharmed after the six hour ordeal which began when Finks bikie member Wayne Williams, 33, shot three men inside a signage business at Ingleburn at 10:45am.

Williams died by suicide when he shot himself.

Mick Bassal, 43, was killed, and his two brothers were injured when Williams opened fire with a long-arm firearm.

One of the other injured brothers was rushed to Liverpool hospital where he underwent emergency surgery, the other suffered superficial gunshot wounds to the legs. Both remained in a stable condition on Monday evening.

Officers and paramedics rushed to Inline National Signage on the corner of Heald and Stennett roads where a siege situation quickly developed, Australian media noted.

Also in the news lately because of another parol hearing has been another Wayne Williams (born May 27, 1958), who is an alleged American serial killer who was tried, convicted, and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1982 for killing two adult men. After his conviction the Atlanta Police announced that Williams was responsible for at least 23 of the 29 Atlanta murders of 1979–1981, also called the "Atlanta Child Murders." Williams continues to maintain his innocence. (W = 23 again.)

Michael A. Hoffman II raised awareness linking "cereal" killers/murders to "serial" killers.  See here.

Yet another Wayne Williams has been in the news lately because of election news from Colorado. Wayne Williams is an American attorney and politician. A member of the Republican Party, he is the Secretary of State of Colorado.

Intriguingly, Williams grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His father was the facilities manager of the National Zoo's Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, where Williams was raised. See "zoo" notes, recently.

Name Game Killings Leave 5 Dead

The "Name Game" associated with shootings is not an amusement activity but an analytic view of situations in which we look for patterns, synchronistically.

In a violent incident occurring Friday, February 26, 2016, several names detailed in this Twilight Language blog, including Washington, Mason, and Bell, not to mention an individual name ~ Wayne ~ were brought to bear.

The murder-suicide event took place Friday, near the rural community of Belfair, Mason County, Washington State.

George Washington (1722-1799), a Freemason, whose membership is well-known and celebrated. The Masonic mapmakers have honored Washington by using his name throughout the landscape of America.

Authorities employed tear gas to flush out a suicidal man who had killed three family members and a neighbor. After he stepped outside his house, he used a gun to kill himself.

David Wayne Campbell, the killer, was 51.

Over 3½ hours, trained negotiators tried to persuade Campbell to surrender, but “it became evident that the suspect was not going to leave the residence voluntarily,” the sheriff’s office said. Deputies could see him pacing inside, often holding a handgun to his head. He pulled the trigger, soon after.

Authorities said they found four other bodies in a chicken coop on the remote, wooded property on Horseshoe Drive, near Belair.

The victims are Lana J. Carlson, 49; Quinn Carlson, 16; and Tory Carlson,18. David Wayne Campbell was married to Lana Carlson.

The Name Game in the names.

In Jim Brandon's 1983 book, The Rebirth of Pan: Hidden Faces of the American Earth Spirit, he writes, regarding the "name game":
I'm not talking here of such spooky tongue-twisters as H.P. Lovecraft's Yog-Sothoth or Arthur Machen's Ishakshar, but of quite ordinary names like Bell, Beall and variants, Crowley, Francis, Grafton, Grubb, Magee/McGee, Mason, McKinney, Montpelier, Parsons, Pike, Shelby, Vernon, Watson/Watt, Williams/Williamson. I have others on file, but these are the ones which I have accumulated the most instances.
In my 1983 Mysterious America, I wrote:
Cryptologic or coincidence? Jim Brandon should be credited with calling attention to the name Watts/Watkins/Watson, and its entanglement with inexplicable things. Some other names involved in mysterious events pinpointed by Brandon are Bell, Mason, Parsons, Pike, Vernon, and Warren. The influence of such names as Mason, Pike, Warren, and Lafayette, for example, issues, in some cryptopolitical and occult way, from their ties to the Masonic tradition.
Followers of the Dark Knight/Batman might think of "Bruce Wayne," but other associations come to mind when the name "Wayne" is heard.

Within the "weird news" field, it has been a well-known truism that if a criminal has a middle name of "Wayne," no one in the newsroom is surprised he is being charged with murder. The examples are multiple. The most famous case, of course, is John Wayne Gacy.

My colleague and correspondent Chuck Shepherd, has been a student of this "name game" for years. Here's what Chuck says about it, in an introduction to the topic:
The Classic Middle Name
It only occurred to me in the early 1990s that "Wayne" was a popular middle name among a few of the most heinous murderers of our time, e.g., the clown John Wayne Gacy (who killed almost three dozen boys and young men in the late 1970s and buried most of them beneath the floorboards of his Des Plaines, Ill., home) and Elmer Wayne Henley (sentenced to six consecutive life terms in 1974 in Houston for his role, with ringleader Dean Allen Corll, in the murders of 27 young men). I began to publish periodic lists in 1996, and soon readers made sure I never missed a one that made the news. Source, plus his impressively long list of names.

Some names carry more baggage than others.

Now, today, Mother's Day, May 12, 2013, there is a breaking story out of Waynesville, Indiana, in Bartholomew County.

Police are reporting that Saturday night, four dead bodies were discovered in a residence there. The three deceased men (in the front room) and one dead woman (in the bedroom) had been shot.

The victims have been identified as 53-year-old Katherine Burton, 39-year-old Thomas Smith, 41-year-old Aaron Cross and 41-year old Shawn Burton. No suspect is in custody.
Authorities identified the others who were killed as Katheryn Burton's longtime boyfriend, 39-year-old Thomas Smith, who also lived at the home, and two 41-year-old Columbus men, Aaron Cross and Shawn Burton. The coroner said the Columbus men were friends of the couple, but were not related to them. Waynesville is a few miles south of Columbus. Source.
Wayne is an Old English name that means "wagon-wright," "wagon builder," and/or "wagon-driver."

Bartholomew was one of the 12 apostles, sometimes called Nathanael (Mark 3:18). It is a male name, from the Hebrew, meaning "son of Talmai."

Bartholomew County was formed on February 12, 1821 and was named for Lt. Col. Joseph Bartholomew, wounded at the Battle of Tippecanoe. Bartholomew joined the Revolutionary War at the age of 10, and he served as a scout for General “Mad” Anthony Wayne.  Bartholomew married Christiana Pickenpaugh in 1788. His daughter Martha and several of his grandchildren were some of the earliest converts to Mormonism and several were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Of course, it is only a coincidence to note that the town directly south of Waynesville, Indiana, only 11 miles away, is Seymour, Indiana. Fifty-seven miles west of Seymour is Aurora, Indiana.
