Earthquake!

On Sunday, February 28, 2016, I tweeted, "HBO premiered San Andreas the night before the 88th Oscars. Do they know when The Big One is coming?"

Okay, there was no large earthquake on February 28th out West in the USA.

But actor George Kennedy, a great disaster movie star, died. See "Naked Gun, Dallas, Earthquake And Cool Hand Luke Actor George Kennedy Dies At 91."

As you see, one of the motion pictures he was in was Earthquake (1974).

And, while not having a major role in the movie...there gracing one of the posters for the film: George Kennedy.

More Tridents: Poseidon Vineyard, DragonCon and Norfolk

Are tridents leading us to another foreshadowing?

On August 20, 2014, I predicted an event would occur tied to all the appearances of tridents of late.

Entitled, "Trident Alert: Watch August 24," a date was identified and the link to tridents was made. 

Poseidon, whose weapon of choice, is the trident, is the "God of the Sea," but also the "Earth-Shaker," the one who causes earthquakes.

August 24th dawned with earthquake news. Poseidon had thrust his Trident on August 24, after all.

BREAKING NEWS: Northern California has been rocked by a 6 earthquake!!!

Today's posting is to capture what the San Francisco Chronicle has written on this quake's epicenter (before these words disappear from their news site). It also feels if someone was reading my blog.

In Peter Fimrite's "Boats, grapes and Poseidon at Napa quake's epicenter," on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, in the San Francisco Chronicle, the paper shared, in part:

…The epicenter of what is being dubbed "the South Napa earthquake" was smack dab beneath the Napa Valley Marina, a somewhat nondescript boatyard, dry dock and launching spot surrounded by vineyards and farmland with a view of San Pablo Bay about a half-mile away over the wetlands.

The epicenter was found using coordinates provided by the U.S. Geological Survey. Geologists say it is common for the majority of damage to occur at least a concentric mile away from the rupture, which occurred Sunday when two tectonic plates - the North American and Pacific - moved horizontally past each other, causing the Earth's crust to crack where the pressure was the greatest.
Science aside, there is at least circumstantial evidence that the epicenter may have been chosen by a wrathful god, vineyard owner Arpad Molnar said. Molnar, the co-founder of Tricycle Wine Partners, owns Poseidon Vineyard, which was planted next to the marina by his father in 1973.
Molnar, who is also a sailor, questioned whether it was just coincidence that an earthquake would erupt beneath a vineyard named after the Greek god of the sea and often referred to as "the earth-shaker" because of the deity's role in causing quakes.
"The placement of the epicenter, which is literally right underneath the vineyard, is really, really uncanny," he said of the property, which, unlike the marina, sustained several 10- to 15-foot-long cracks.
Molnar, who once bottled a wine called "Shipwreck," said it would be nice if the earthquake actually improved the wine, but far be it for him to suggest such a thing.
"We don't want to make too much of it," he said, in deference to the many people who suffered from the quake. "But I think we'll probably end up doing a little special bottling for the 2014 vintage to commemorate it. ... We thought maybe we'd do a little epicenter wine."

My own sightings of tridents continue.

The above is the first thing I saw on my August 28th Delta flight to Atlanta. Even a fork can be a trident.

 In Atlanta, speaking at DragonCon 2014, I kept bumping into people with Tridents.

Various events made me look more closely at my own history. Where did this all start for me? Where was I born?

I examined the site of my birth, Norfolk, Virginia, to see how long ago this began, personally, for me. I wondered at "why" I would be noticing that fact now. Norfolk is where my father was stationed at the time, of course, in the U.S. Navy. While a few U.S. Naval Stations do employ tridents in their logos and insignias, it certainly is not true that they all do. See here. But Norfolk does, routinely.

Poseidon's Vineyard: August 24 Trident Prediction On Target

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake rocked wine country north of San Francisco early on Sunday, August 24, 2014, fulfilling a prediction I made tied to this date. Actually, Poseidon's tridents got my attention for there have been 3 quakes in 24 hrs: Chile, 6.4; California, 6.1; Peru, 6.9, all along the western coast of the Americas. (Please see more on the prediction, at "Trident Alert: Watch August 24," which was posted on August 20th.)

Let's look at the name game uniqueness of the California shaking.

The morning earthquake injured dozens of people, two of them seriously, damaging historic buildings, setting some homes on fire and causing power outages around the picturesque town of Napa, first thought to be centered below a town named American Canyon. One hospital reported 70 people showed up with earthquake-related injuries. Overall, 170 people were said to be injured, with no deaths reported (source).

The biggest quake in the region in 25 years jolted many residents out of bed when it hit at 3:20 a.m. local time (1020 GMT), in the Napa Valley of California.

Enki King emailed me: "I just took a look at Google Maps. Poseidon's Vineyard is a little less than a mile north of the quake's epicenter (38°12'50.4"N 122°19'08.4"W)!"

Poseidon, whose weapon of choice, is the trident, is the "God of the Sea," but also the "Earth-Shaker," the one who causes earthquakes. He is also called the "tamer of horses."

Furthermore, under eight miles away, is the Silver Trident Vineyard. The Silver trident is at 110 Camino, Oruga Napa, CA 94558, and Posiedon's Vineyard or Posiedon Vineyard (it is given as both) is at 1100 Milton Rd, Napa, CA 94559.

The epicenter of the Chilean earthquake is Hacienda La Calera, 108 kilometers (67 miles) NW of Santiago, Chile. La Calera is a city with a population of about 50,000 people, in the Quillota Province of central Chile's fifth region of Valparaíso. La Calera's name comes from the production of quicklime (Spanish "cal") that is obtained from the processed limestone (Spanish: piedra caliza) (calcium carbonate), extracted from the hills at the south of the town, which were already exploited by the Chilean and Peruvian Natives for some 400 years previously. Therefore, La Calera means "quicklime mine". The estate of La Calera belonged to the Jesuits up to 1767. The turning point came in 1842, when it was acquired by Bolivian citizen Ildefonso Huici, who started industrialising it with local products.
Today, among the important immigrant communities who settled in La Calera before 1950, Palestinians stand out, which makes this town with the largest proportion of Palestine people in Latin America.

Tambo, Peru is a sparsely populated community in central Peru, about 467 kilometers (290 miles) SE of the capital of Lima. The word tambo (Quechua: tampu, "inn") refers to an Incan structure built for administrative and military purposes. Found along Incan roads, tambos typically carried supplies, served as lodging for itinerant state personnel, and were depositories of quipu-based accounting records. Meanwhile, Suge Knight, a founder of Death Row Records, was shot on August 24. In this entertainment assassination attempt, Knight and two others were reportedly the victims of shots said to be aimed at Chris Brown and possibly Justin Bieber.

Gunshots rang out at a pre-Video Music Awards party hosted by Chris Brown and singer Pia Mia in West Hollywood in the early morning hours on Sunday [August 24, 2014].
Shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a shooting occurred at 1OAK nightclub in the 9000 block of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood where two men and a woman were wounded, the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said in a statement provided to the Daily News.
The suspect remains unknown, but the victims include a 49-year-old male, widely reported as music producer Marion (Suge) Knight, as well as two unnamed victims, a 32-year-old male and a 19-year-old female. All the victims were transported to local hospitals and are expected to recover.

Maine Earthquake

I was sitting at home, when at 7:12 pm Eastern, my house shook like it has never before. (Freight trains roll through this part of Portland, a block and half away, so I thought when it started, it was just another train. But this was shaky like no train going by.)

I've felt earthquakes before. During the parts of two years I lived in San Francisco, earthquakes, mostly small ones, were not unusual. The biggest quake I remember before tonight was one in southern Illinois, on November 9, 1968. It hit at 11:02 am, and it measured 5.4. I vividly recall I was working with mental health patients at Anna State Hospital, in a large hall, used as a gym, on the hospital campus. We all raced outside, although I did wait a bit under the arch doorway of that grand hall. Reading about that New Madrid quake nowadays, I see what a large event it was and how lucky we were.

Tonight's earthquake is said to have measured at first 4.5, then it was upgraded to 4.6, definitely the largest in New England in a long time. Eyewitnesses across the Boston area reported feeling the quake for up to 20 to 30 seconds. (Wednesday morning, and the feds have downgraded it to 4.0. I must say, they must not be New Englanders and survived that one, cause it sure didn't feel like a little 4.0 quake.)

The epicenter is said to be centered west of Hollis and Lake Arrowhead, Maine, 23 miles west of Portland, where I live. But more importantly, the epicenter was first said to be 17 miles deep, then later only 3 (and on Wednesday, 4.1) miles deep. That is a very shallow earthquake, and probably why it felt so powerful here.

Mainers are tough people, and there does not seem to be any damage reported from this quake yet. (Wednesday: Some cracked foundations and chimneys are being discussed.)

Standing on the sidelines at a soccer game in Waterboro Tuesday night, Kevin St. Jarre saw the spectators in the bleachers across the field suddenly stand up. Then a ripple, a "landwave," began rolling from the bleachers and heading toward him.

"It came across the field, and it passed beneath my feet and then behind me to where the team was sitting on the bench," said St. Jarre, who coaches the Massabesic High School varsity girls, who were playing against Scarborough High School.

"We pulled the players off the field and took a five minute break and calmed the girls down." ~ Tom Bell, writing in the Portland Press Herald, October 17, 2012.

What surprised me was the explosion of humor on the social media. Here are photographic samples of the "damage" and how people immediately reacted to this earthquake.

An earthquake hit off Japan also on October 16th. But thirty minutes after the Maine earthquake, one hit in New Zealand.

Eclipse Today = Earthquakes Tomorrow?

Seeing it in Asia: The moon's shadow races eastward across Earth's surface at more than 2,000 mph, starting in China's southern Guangxi Province. Theoretically, the "Ring of Fire" could be visible just after 6 p.m. ET over Asian urban centers such as Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Osaka and Tokyo. But for many of those cities, the weather outlook isn't that great: Cloudy skies or even thundershowers are in the forecast.

Seeing it in America: The partial eclipse begins over the U.S. West Coast and Canada around 8 p.m. ET, and even earlier in Alaska. Skywatchers in portions of Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas can witness the "Ring of Fire" effect at its peak after 9 p.m. ET. As you go farther east, sunset becomes the limiting factor. The U.S. East Coast, for example, will miss out on all phases of the eclipse. Consult NASA's clickable map to find out what will be visible from your locale. The times are listed as UTC, so subtract five hours for Central Daylight Time, six hours for Mountain Time, and seven hours for Pacific Time. Don't forget to check the weather, too.

Meanwhile, for those looking for the links between full moons, new moons, eclipses, and strong earthquakes, all you have to do is read the morning news.

Aftershocks continued to be felt in northern Italy on Sunday after a strong earthquake in the early hours killed at least seven [updated Monday May 21st], injured more than 50 and reduced historic churches and castle towers to rubble.

The epicentre of the quake, which the US Geological Survey recorded at magnitude 6.0, was 3.2 miles below ground, north of Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region, and was felt across Italy, from Liguria to the Veneto.

Hundreds of terrified residents fled their homes and hospitals were evacuated after the 20-second earthquake struck at 4.04 am. While major towns including Bologna emerged unscathed, helicopters were flying over remote villages as day broke, looking for collapsed buildings in which survivors could be trapped.

Four people killed by the quake were working overnight in factories which collapsed, including Geraldo Cesaro, 57, one of 10 employees at Tecopress, a maker of aluminium car parts in Sant' Agostino, where the town hall was seriously damaged and in danger of collapse.

DC Obelisk Tilting?

Is the Washington Monument tilting due to the earthquake?

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered around Richmond, Virginia was felt as far as New York City and New England on August 23, 2011.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly reported at 2:30 pm their bureau received information from a producer saying that a Captiol Hill Police officer was saying the Washington Monument may actually be tilting as a result of the earthquake.

Seismologist John Rundle joined Kelly on her show and confirmed that the Washington Monument could very well be tilting as a result of the earthquake and the structure should be checked out.

Two nuclear reactors have reportedly been taken off line near the epicenter of the earthquake.

According to the AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) — A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island, New York City and Martha's Vineyard, Mass., where President Barack Obama is vacationing.The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile deep.

Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

It was centered near Louisa, Va., which is northwest of Richmond and south of Washington.

Obama and many of the nation's leaders were out of town on August vacation when the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. EDT. The shaking was felt on the Martha's Vineyard golf course as Obama was just starting a round.

The East Coast gets earthquakes, but usually smaller ones and is less prepared than California or Alaska for shaking.At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking.

Authorities announced it was an earthquake and all flights were put on hold.

At the Pentagon in northern Virginia, a low rumbling built and built to the point that the building was shaking. People ran into the corridors of the government's biggest building and as the shaking continued there were shouts of "Evacuate! Evacuate!"

*UPDATE 1: The Hill is reporting that the Park Service is stating there is no serious damage to any of D.C.'s national monuments:

U.S. Park Police in Washington made an initial survey of the city's monuments after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake and found no serious damage.

According to The Washington Post, the Park Police checked the monuments by helicopter shortly after the earthquake on Tuesday.

*UPDATE 2: (via Real Clear Politics): CNN is reporting that "some stones are loose" at the Washington Monument. 

*Update 3: (Via NBC News Washington): National Park Service: Washington Monument is not tilting

The NPS said it is evaluating the structures to ensure that they are structurally sound and safe for all visitors.

Agency spokesman Jeffrey Olson told the AP that there was "absolutely no damage" to the Washington Monument, contrary to media reports elsewhere that it was leaning.

"Absolutely incorrect," U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said of media reports that the Washington Monument was leaning.  "It stands tall and proud."

However, the Washington Monument, because of its structural complexities, will remain closed until further notice, according to the NPS.
