Synchromystic Howard Hughes

by Loren Coleman, 11.28.2016.

Howard Hughes has been portrayed by several actors.

Howard Hughes testifying before Senate Hearings, August 6, 1947.

Here's a synchocinematic overview.

Jimmy Dean as Willard Whyte, as inspired by Howard Hughes, in Diamonds Are Forever (1971). For a deeper look by Kenn Thomas & David Hatcher Childress at these coded "gemstones" behind the "diamonds" in the movie's title, see here.

Tommy Lee Jones as The Amazing Howard Hughes (TV Movie 1977).

Jason Robards as Howard Hughes in Melvin and Howard (1980).

Dean Stockwell as Howard Hughes in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988).

Terry O'Quinn as Howard Hughes in The Rocketeer (1991).

Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes in The Aviator (2004).

Various individuals state Iron Man's Tony Stark character's father Howard may be inspired by Howard Hughes. Others feel the role might be inspired by Jack Parsons. Tony Stark is also tied to Hughes. Stan Lee has noted that Tony, who shared several of Hughes' traits himself, was based on Hughes. It can get confusing.

Robert Downey, Jr. was cast as the title character, Tony Stark, in the Iron Man (beginning in 2008) franchise. Some saw Tony Stark as being inspired by Howard Hughes. But is Hughes more correctly tied to the Howard Stark character?

Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), here compared to Jack Parsons.

John Slattery as Howard Stark in Iron Man 2 (2010).

John Slattery as Howard Stark in Ant-Man (2015). John Slattery also appeared as Howard Stark in Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Warren Beatty as Howard Hughes in Rules Don't Apply (2016).

Something else to think about as 2016 comes to a rapid close: "Trump a Lot Like Howard Hughes."

I happen to be wearing my Captain America t-shirt as I read this nice compilation. It occurs to me that Tommy Lee Jones was also in Captain America: the First Avenger, playing Colonel Phillips. Which had Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, the Howard Hughes/Jack Parsons resonator. And of course, Jack Parsons was a rocket scientist, taking us back to the Rocketeer.
