James Holmes' Evolving Appearance

Today is the second anniversary of the The Dark Knight Rises shooting on July 20, 2012. That mayhem took place in Theater 9 at the Century 16, in Aurora, Colorado, and left 12 people dead, 70 injured.

At top is James Holmes, during a March 2013 court appearance, showing his "new look." The photograph below is from a June 2013 court session.

Holmes reportedly converted to Islam and prays five times a day, noted 2013 news items. (See here, as well.)

Holmes' presentation of self has evolved since his arrest.

On July 17, 2014, Circa wrote:
Witnesses at a pre-trial hearing discussing evidence told the court in Oct. 2013, that when James Holmes' bedroom was searched after the July 20, 2012, theater shooting, police found that his calendar had the date of the shooting marked "with a unique symbol."

Thomas McGrath of Dangerous Minds wrote an article, "The Copycat Effect: Meet the Man Who Predicted the Aurora Shooting," which captures well my experience of the event.

Aurora Again - Four Dead

The location of the initial red dawn (Colorado = red, Aurora = dawn) event is in the news again. A standoff and killing of four people took place at 16005 East Ithaca Place, near the intersection of Ithaca Place and Kittredge.

As many as 40 officers, including SWAT teams and hostage negotiators, first responsed to the scene at the home in Aurora, Colorado, at 3:00 am, on Saturday, January 5, 2013.
An “armed and dangerous” man was reported to be holed up inside the suburban Denver home, possibly with as many as three hostages, police said.

Later, 9 News and other media sources confirmed that four people were killed inside the suburban townhouse in Aurora, Colorado, including the gunman, who was shot by officers, law enforcement authorities confirm. He was shot when he went to the second floor, and began firing on police.

A fifth person reportedly escaped unharmed.

The shootings occurred about four miles southeast of the Aurora Mall, where at the Century theater complex 12 people were killed and 58 wounded by a gunman at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012. The man charged in that shooting, James Eagan Holmes, goes to court Monday, January 7, 2012, for a preliminary hearing in which prosecutors will lay out their case against him.

Listen To The Fates: Bushmasters Measure How Long Life Will Be

Be alert. Look deeply.

A snake. A semi-automatic assault rifle. But not a leader of men.

Josh Voorhees said it all in the headline to his December 26th article in The Slatest: "Weapon of Choice: Holmes, Roberts, Lanza and Spengler All Used Same Type of Assault Rifle."

A frequent pattern of some copycat effect events, whether of a series of mass shootings, suicides, or murder-suicides, is the same method being used, often down to the specific type of weapon employed.

Sadly, the gun of choice in recent horrific shootings has forever linked Aurora, Clackamas, Sandy Hook-Newtown, and Webster. A little research probably will link this assault rifle to other multiple victim shootings.

Oh, yes, it already has. John Allen Muhammed and Lee Boyd Malvo, the Beltway Snipers, used a Bushmaster to kill ten and injure three others in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland in October 2002. Prior to those shootings, apparently Muhammed and Malvo were involved other killings, such as the one on September 23, 2002. That killing of a victim in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was also with a Bushmaster rifle. The Beltway snipers killed people with a Bushmaster XM-15 semiautomatic .223 caliber rifle equipped with a reflex sight. The manufacturer of the rifle in 2002 was Bushmaster Firearms, Inc. of Windham, Maine.

The Bushmaster is the gun in the news of late.

It would seem (and some sites confirm it) that this assault rifle was named after the largest venomous snake in the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, the snake is part of the logo of the company. (See at top.)

Lachesis mutus

Lachesis, The Measurer, is on the right.

The common names for the three different species of this snake are the black-headed, the Central American, and the South American bushmasters. The bushmaster's genus name is Lachesis.
Lachesis is a genus of venomous pitvipers found in remote forested areas of Central and South America. The generic name refers to one of the Three Fates in Greek mythology who determined the length of the thread of life.....
One of the largest and most dangerous snakes in South America, this snake is capable of multiple-bite strikes and the injection of large amounts of venom. Even the bite of a juvenile specimen can be fatal. However, this snake is basically nocturnal and contact with humans is minimized for this reason.  Source.

Lachesis, The Measurer
The Three Fates are:
Clotho, the spinner, who spins the thread of life. Lachesis, the measurer, who choses the lot in life one will have and measures off how long it is to be. Atropos, she who cannot be turned, who at death with her shears cuts the thread of life. Source.
As a boy, I remember the bushmaster being mentioned, often, in the books of early naturalists like Raymond Ditmars. Recently one writer recalled a memorably dangerous encounter Ditmars had with a bushmaster in the 1920s, at the Bronx Zoo. Bushmasters are snakes not to be discounted.

The Bushmaster products site has teeshirts, cups, and bomber hats. They all subtly push the myth-making that the assault rifle makes its owner into venomous warriors among men.

The Bushmaster .223 rifle has a history that appears to attract symbolic names.

"The AR-15 rifle was first developed by the Fairchild ArmaLite corporation in 1957. ArmaLite sold the rights to the design to Colt in 1959, and the weapon was adapted for military use as the M16; it went in to service in Vietnam in 1963. The modern AR-15 is a demilitarized version of the M16, and is now manufactured by several companies including Bushmaster...," noted Time.

The Bushmaster and its corporate parent, Freedom Group, is a private company owned by a New York-based hedge fund, Cerberus Capital Management, since 2006.

Cerberus figurine, SafariLtd.

Cerberus in Greek and Roman mythology is a multi-headed hound (usually three-headed), which guards the gates of the Underworld (Hades), to prevent those who have crossed the river Styx from ever escaping.

But now, in the wake of the Newtown shooting, Bushmaster is being put up for sale by Cerebrus because of the new attention to the rifle.

One name origin for the Bushmaster is approaching almost comical mythical status: That the Bushmaster rifle was named after (now former) President George W. Bush. Not true.

The Bushmaster, clearly, is the most venomous of guns, the one that measures the length of the lives of too many innocents.

The underlying theme with this gun is death and more death.

Three Cups of Synchromystic Suicides and More

One of the reasons that I wrote a chapter in Sync Book 2: Outer + Inner Space, Shadow + Light: 26 Essays on Synchronicity (Volume 2), edited by Alan Abbadessa-Green (Sync Book Press, 2012), was to share my personal journey of being a Fortean, and how that would naturally evolve into synchromystically looking at the world. After all, synchromysticism was only coined a mere six years ago. Synchromystics were labeled something else, altogether, in the past. Therefore, I felt other Forteans might look upon this arena in a new light, and decide to share their thoughts, synchromystically, too.

My copy of the book arrived this week, and I'm happy I agreed to contribute to this brainy volume. My involvement with synchromystic bloggers has resulted in intellectually stimulating exchanges with some great correspondents.

This week I received an intriguing contribution from one such individual, for Twilight Language.

This one deals with the suicide of David Oliver Relin, coauthor with Greg Mortenson, of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time (Penguin Books, 2007).
Arcadia Pariah shares the following with all of us here:
From the article on the suicide in The Daily Beast:
“On Wednesday, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s office reached an official determination that David Oliver Relin took his life on Nov. 15 by stepping in front of a freight train outside Portland, Ore.
The 49-year-old coauthor of the bestseller-turned-controversy Three Cups of Tea is said to have driven to the Corbett Hill Road exit of Interstate 84 and left his car in a parking area beside the railroad tracks that run along the Columbia River.” [emphasis added]

David Oliver Relin [photo, above] was co-author of the best-selling book, Three Cups of Tea, the subject of which are humanitarian pursuits in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The book, based on the experiences of co-author Greg Mortenson, resulted in lawsuits regarding allegations of misleading information, as well as mismanagement of funds at the Central Asia Institute (a humanitarian organisation managed by Mortenson). Many questioned the veracity of claims by Mortenson that he was captured by the Taliban in 1996. The innocence of Mr. Relin was maintained by many throughout the controversy, however his known history of depression was most likely exacerbated by the stress of the controversy itself.
Wikipedia sites a Balti proverb as the source of the title: "The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family...", which has an interesting Tarot connection. The Three of Cups has several divinatory interpretations, and while interpretation is necessarily vague, the themes of family, celebration, fertility/abundance, and a fruitful end to a goal are frequently repeated. That the suit of Cups is often represented as Chalices opens up even further synchromystic links.
A brief look into the etymology of his name reveals the following:
David – from Hebrew Dawid, probably derived from Herbrew dwd, meaning,“beloved.” Name of the Old Testament King of Israel, known for slaying the giant Philistine Goliath, and is also the name of two kings of Scotland, and the 5th Century Patron Saint of Wales.
Oliver/Olivier – Norman-French form of Olaf, is derived from the Old Norse name Aleifr, “ancestor's descendent.Olaf was the name of five kings of Norway, including Saint Olaf/Olaf II, known for Christianising much of the Scandinavian world, as referenced in the Icelandic sagas by Snorri Sturluson. From Latin oliva, “olive tree.”
Relin – possibly related to the surname Rollins. Rollins is a patronymic name derived from one of two Germanic compounds: Hrolf (hrod [renown] + wulf [wolf]), or Rowland (hrod [renown] + land [territory]). The related name Roland was introduced by the Normans, and is associated with the story of Charlemagne's nephew as told in, La Chanson de Roland. The surname is similar to the Latin linquo, from which the word relinquish is derived, and the Greek and Proto-Indo-European cognates resonate the same meaning.
Here we have another Columbia connection, and the death of an innocent king by his own hand connected directly to fertility. It's shameful that a promising writer became a casualty of human hubris, and as interesting as these connections are, it remains a woeful affair and ill-tidings of things to come.

Aurora Halloween Mask

How would you feel if a kid showed up at your door with this mask on for Halloween, trick or treating?

It is ironic that the man accused of killing 12 on July 20th, when first wearing a Bane-like outfit to be revealed as a self-styled "Joker," has now become a mask.

The mask was briefly displayed for sale on eBay on Friday, October 6, 2012, and then withdrawn. Some reports indicate the price reached $500.

The individual who placed the eBay notice put this description with the listing:
Halloween is only a month away. SHOCK EVERYONE YOU KNOW! He was referred to as "The Joker", "The Dark Knight Shooter," "The Ilama," "The Extraordinary Gifted" but his real name is JAMES HOLMES! There is nothing more scary than crawling into James Holmes mind and wearing his face. His "soul penetrating eyes" and "The Joker" orange hair makes this mask the most disturbing object you will ever own. Imagine owning the mask of supposedly the most dangerous mass murderer in US history. This is a high quality latex rubber mask which was custom designed for a private collector overseas. I won this mask playing high stakes poker tournament when I was in Europe. I guaranty you that this is the only mask in the world and it is practically priceless because it was used in the production of the most controversy documentary which will come out in 2013. This mask is sold as is and there are no returns. If you have 0 feedback and you are interested to bid on this item you have to contact me first. I will ship the mask immediately after I receive the payment. Good luck!
Others have found their own ways to be a "Holmes" copycat without a mask.

This includes the tragic stories of those wearing other masks.

Aurora Will Be In The Arena

by Loren Coleman ©2012

On a television near you...

Nine miles from Theater 9.

+++++++++
Brief update: The 2012 Presidential Debate in Denver had no mainstream, street-level topics, and ignored general news issues from this summer. I shall leave this posting, as it, nevertheless. A great opportunity was missed by Mr. Jim Lehrer to make this a relevant debate in Colorado.
+++++++++

Last Halloween, who could have predicted that one of the words that we almost certainly would hear at this year's Presidential Debate would be Aurora?

Today, Aurora connects the human consciousness and the unconscious to so much. Mass shooting. July 20th. The Dark Knight Rises. Bane. Bain. James Eagan Holmes. "I am the Joker." Media. Wall-to-wall coverage. Movie theaters. Fear. Twelve Dead. Seventy shot. Darkness. Midnight showing. Colorado. Aurora. Blood. Red. Dawn.

Will the subject of mass shootings or gun control come up during the 2012 Presidential Debate in Denver, Colorado?

If it does, you can almost predict the wording that will be presented to the candidates:

"We find ourselves here tonight at the University of Denver in Colorado. Right down the road, in Aurora, in July, a dozen of our fellow citizens' lives were lost to what appears to have been the act of an alleged lone gunman [or substitute "madman"]. Something similar also happened near here before, at Columbine. What is your position on how we can best stop these shootings?"

After all, this first debate is in Colorado, in Denver. How can they ignore what happened near there on July 20, 2012? Or on April 20, 1999?

+++++++
+++++++

Indeed, the pressure was on this week to address Aurora during the debate.
A man wounded in the theater shooting, Stephen Barton, appears in a television ad that will air nationally this week in which he asks the candidates to explain how they would reduce gun violence.
"I never thought I'd be a shooting victim until I was bleeding on a floor in Aurora," Barton said in a statement. "I was lucky, but I've seen what happens when dangerous people get their hands on guns. And I think it's fair to ask the men who want to lead the country to get past the platitudes and give us a serious plan to address a serious problem." Source.

Meanwhile, the relatives of eight of the 12 victims who died at The Dark Knight Rises screening in Aurora, Colorado, asked Jim Lehrer, the moderator of the presidential debate in Denver Wednesday, to ask the candidates about gun violence.

"Hey, didn't they have this debate in Colorado because of the Aurora shootings," some people ask?

Or, "Was it because Colorado has turned into a swing state?"

Intriguingly, Colorado was picked as the site of the first 2012 Presidential Election Debates some time ago.

How long ago?

Actually, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates first announced, on the highly symbolic date of Halloween, October 31, 2011, that four sites had been picked.

Here are those four locations, dates, and topics:
First Presidential (domestic policy) Wednesday, October 3; Magness Arena, University of Denver, Denver, Colorado;
Vice Presidential (domestic and foreign) Thursday, October 11; Norton Center for the Arts, Centre College, Danville, Kentucky;
Second Presidential (town-meeting format) Tuesday, October 16; David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York;
Third Presidential (foreign policy) Monday, October 22; Wold Performing Arts Center, Lynn University, Boca Raton, Florida.
The sites were selected to give some geographic representation to the debate choices. Any other reason is "purely coincidental," we are told.

Is it just synchromystic that Aurora is so close to the first debate at the Magness Arena?

Magness? Magness has its origins in magnus, the word for great and dean. The Magness Arena is named after cable television pioneer Bob Magness, who donated $10 million towards construction costs. Bob Magness, 72, who ran a tiny cable television company out of his kitchen before building Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) into the nation's largest cable provider, died of cancer in November 1996 in Denver. He had created his first cable system 40 years ago in Memphis, Texas, then merged his cable provider Community Television Inc. and its microwave distribution partnership, Western Microwave Inc., to create TCI when he moved to Denver in 1968. The company now has 14 million subscribers nationwide.

His billionaire son is Gary Magness, who owned TCI until it merged with AT&T in 1999 in a $54 billion deal. Gary has inherited hundreds of millions of dollars in stock. He owns water rights in Colorado through ranch holdings; also invests in oil, gas, and cattle. Gary and his wife produced the film Precious.

The Magness Arena can be identified around the city of Denver by the attached 215-foot-tall (66 m), gold-spired Williams Tower, which contains a 65-bell carillon.

How far is it from the University of Denver's Magness Arena, at 2201 East Asbury Avenue, Denver, CO 80208, to Theater 9, Century 16 Cinemas, at 14300 East Alameda Avenue, Aurora, CO 80012? It's 9 miles, as the crow flies, but 10-13.3 miles, depending on your travel route (back way along East Alameda vs major highways I-25/I-255) there.

This leaves an obvious question to ask ourselves: Was it the Cosmic Joker that picked Colorado's Aurora to dominate the news for this Summer of the Gun, or was it something more human and wicked that this way came to choose this specific Denver-Aurora area for these red dawn events?
Why was Aurora "picked"?
Will the word Aurora be heard at the October 3rd debate? Our forecast is, "Yes."

Theaters and Theater Suspect On Fire

All things, oh priests, are on fire
The eye is on fire;
Forms are on fire;
Eye-consciousness is on fire;
Impressions received by the eye are on fire.
~ Buddha - Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta,
founder of Buddhism, 563-483 B.C.

Fires have been traditionally associated with equinoxes. This year's September equinox, also known as the autumnal equinox in the northern hemisphere, will be on September 22, 2012. To be exact, this will occur at September 22, 2012, 14:49 GMT.

Intriguingly, after a week of the "World on Fire" allegedly caused by a film, the fires have moved onto and into theaters:
At least one person has died as demonstrations against an anti-Islam video erupt across Pakistan, a day after protesters tried to storm the US embassy in the capital, Islamabad.
Angry demonstrators set fire to two cinemas in the northwestern city of Peshawar, police and witnesses said on Friday, as the country began a day of protests.
One protester was wounded when a cinema guard opened fire as crowds armed with clubs and bamboo poles converged on the Firdaus picture house, "smashing it up and setting furniture ablaze," according to Gohar Ali, a police officer.
Witnesses said a separate rampaging crowd stormed the Shama cinema, notorious locally for showing films considered to be pornographic.
Aljazeera, 21 September 2012.

Protestors attacked Capri, Nishat and Prince cinemas in Karachi, as they marched on the main M.A. Jinnah road in the city’s downtown area.
According to DawnNews, Capri and Nishat cinemas were partially damaged while Prince cinema was set afire by violent mobs.
~ DawnNews, 21 September 2012.

Meanwhile, yesterday, September 20, 2012, during the newest hearing for alleged Aurora movie theater shooter James Eagan (= fiery) Holmes, he showed his new look.

Let's see the visual evolution we have been given by the media and/or the courts.

The first view of the suspect was in his initial open court arraignment.

Then there was the release later the same day of the "booking" photograph, which may have been taken some time after he was arrested on July 20, 2012 up through when he was arraigned, days later. His beard growth appears contemporary with the court appearance growth.

The Internet soon was awash with recently "old" photos of Holmes, with the red/orange fluffy hair style and similar beard growth.

The Joker is historically shown with green hair, but examples were found of orange-haired ones too, which may have served as Holmes' copycat source.

Now comes the closed court hearing of September 20, 2012, two months later, with new drawings and a new photograph of James Eagan Holmes.

Who do the eyes remind you of?

Humm?

The booking photograph (above) is of Jared Lee Loughner, the confessed shooter of the January 8, 2011, Tucson, Arizona, incident. That event killed six people, including Chief U.S. District Court Judge John Roll, as well as a 9-year-old girl, Christina-Taylor Green, the granddaughter of former Chicago Cubs manager Dallas Green. The shooting also left 14 others wounded, including some critically, like U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (Democrat, Arizona-House 8th).

Booking photographs are funny things. Some questions have been raised about whether or not the first image widely distributed of Loughner (above and on the right, below) has been altered. See here for a larger discussion of that issue. A later "original" photograph of Loughner (below, left) has since been released.

Some photoshopping of the Loughner (below) has been clearly labeled as such.
