April 19th Again: Nova Scotia's Mass Shooting

The high school photograph of Nova Scotia's mass shooter.

For several years I have written of this time of year as a "red zone of danger." I even mentioned the temporal syndrome associated with late April's infamous events in The Copycat Effect: How the Media and Popular Culture Trigger the Mayhem in Tomorrow's Headlines.

During the morning of April 19, 2020, I tweeted a message about recalling today as a date with multiple anniversaries of note: the original Patriots Day of the Revolutionary War due to the battles at Concord and Lexington. The events of Waco and the Oklahoma City Bombing on this date.

I posted images of the Boym Design's two "Buildings of Disaster" for Waco and OKC's Murrah Building.

I have pointed to my extensive listing of violence and deaths tied to this last half of several Aprils in past blog postings, including "The Most Dangerous Time of Year," from 2018, and "The Red Zone of April: A Dangerous Time."

In that piece, I review these events for

April 19:

1775 – Battles of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. This is the actual anniversary of the battles, even though the observance has become a date tied to the third Monday in April.
1897 – First running of the Boston Marathon, with marathons named after the Greek Battle of Marathon.
1993 – The 51-day FBI siege of the Branch Davidian building outside Waco, Texas, USA, ends when a fire breaks out. Eighty-one people die.
1993 – South Dakota governor George Mickelson and seven others are killed when a state-owned aircraft crashes in Iowa.
1995 – Oklahoma City bombing: The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, USA, is bombed, killing 168.
1995 – Richard Wayne Snell, a convicted murderer, member of the white supremacist group The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord (CSA), is executed in Arkansas. Snell was involved in filming the planes that landed at the restricted airport in Mena, Arkansas, believed by many conspiracy theorists to be used in a CIA-sanctioned cover-up to smuggle drugs into America. Snell had been accused of plotting to bomb the Murrah Building in the 1980s. Snell reportedly watched televised reports of the Oklahoma City bombing on the day of his execution and nodded in approval.
2013 – Boston Marathon bombings suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev is killed in a shootout with police. His brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is captured while hiding in a boat inside a backyard in Watertown, Massachusetts.

April 20:

1889 – Adolf Hitler, Austrian-German soldier and politician, Chancellor of Germany (d. 1945) is born
1939 – Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday is celebrated as a national holiday in Nazi Germany.
1945 – World War II: Führerbunker: Adolf Hitler makes his last trip to the surface to award Iron Crosses to boy soldiers of the Hitler Youth.
1961 – Failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion of US-backed Cuban exiles against Cuba.
1971 – According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, he found the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School in 1971, among the Waldos. They would meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue. One of the Waldos notes, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." By extension now, April 20 ("4/20" in U.S. dating shorthand) has evolved into a counterculture holiday, where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis.
1978 – Korean Air Lines Flight 902 is shot down by the Soviet Union.
1999 – Columbine High School massacre: Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, killed 13 people and injured 21 others before dying by suicide at Columbine High School in Columbine, Colorado.
2007 – Johnson Space Center shooting: William Phillips with a handgun barricades himself in NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas before killing a male hostage and himself.
2015 – A substitute teacher was killed at the Joan Fuster School in the La Sager neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain, by a 13-year-old student with a crossbow and machete. Four other people were injured.

Now on April 19, 2020

Therefore, today, Sunday, April 19, 2020, we should not be surprised to learn that a mass shooting has occurred.

From Saturday through Sunday, for 12 hours, a gunman drove across the northern part of the province of Nova Scotia shooting people dead. Canadian police, as of Sunday night, said at least 16 people were dead, plus the gunman too. On Monday morning, during the COVID19 government news conference, the prime minister said a total of 19 people had died.

One of the dead was a police officer and another was injured. The dead officer has been identified as Heidi Stevenson, a mother of two and a 23-year-old veteran of the force.

The victims identified so far, besides RCMP Const. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year member of the national police force, and a mother of two, are Debert Elementary school teacher Lisa McCully; care assistant Kristen Beaton; and Heather O’Brien, a nurse from Truro. Additionally, two correctional officers and two neighbors of the gunman, were all killed in their homes.

Altogether, including the shooter, twenty-three (23) people died in the shooting.

The gunman was named as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, who died after shooting people in several locations across the province. He was described as white male, bald, 6'2" - 6'3" with green eyes.

The shooting reportedly began in the small Atlantic coastal town of Portapique, about 130km north (80 miles) of Halifax, the provincial capital. It ended Sunday, April 19, at a gas station in Enfield. Online records show Wortman ran a denture clinic in the city of Dartmouth, across the water from Halifax.

One local resident said she had come across two burning police vehicles while out driving on Sunday morning. One man said he saw at least three separate fires.

“There was one officer we could see on scene and then all of a sudden, he went running toward one of the burning vehicles,” Darcy Sack told the CBC.

“We heard gunshots,” she said, adding that one police officer looked to have been injured.Authorities said Wortman was driving what appeared to be a police car and was wearing a uniform but later reported he was at the wheel of a Chevrolet sports utility vehicle that had been modified to resemble a white RCMP vehicle – “one that he has basically made himself,” said Brian Sauvé, president of the National Police Federation. Police have said the suspect was not an employee or officer with the RCMP.

There was on difference between Wortman's car and the official RCMP vehicles: the car #. The suspect's car is 28B11, behind rear passenger window.

“In excess of 10 people have been killed,” RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather said, before later revising the total to “at least 13.” “We believe it to be one person who is responsible for all the killings and that he alone moved across the northern part of the province and committed what appears to be several homicides.”

Please note, in high school, Wortman said his "future may include being an RCMP officer."

Name game: "Wortman" = a grower or seller of vegetables or of medicinal herbs and spices.

RCMP's fallen Heidi Stevenson is to be remembered on Friday, April 24, 2020.

What will Monday, April 20th begat?

In 2015, Mother Jones mentioned the high number of "copycats" associated with Columbine. In The Copycat Effect, I tracked over 400 in the month after the April 20, 1999 Columbine shooting.

The cult of Hitler's birthday and Columbine travel forth into the future.

    I-35: Highway to Hell

People have emotional relationships with the highways on which they have to drive often. Interstate 35 is one such road. Writer Sherry Claypool Kuehl once called I-35 "Satan's Parking Lot."

Let's look at it as a "highway to hell" in the wake of the Austin bombings and a quick reflection on its troublesome history.

This map by "Jenny Almond" was originally published on February 5, 2018, on Merovee's blog.  It showed predictive insights regarding the Austin bombings. For example, bomber Mark Anthony Conditt's suicide occurred in Round Rock, which is visible on her map.

Other items that Jenny Almond and Tom Mellett have noted should be added to the map include:

    ~ The Alamo, The Battle of the Alamo, San Antonio, February 23 – March 6, 1836;

    ~ The Ebola outbreak at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Dallas, October 12, 2014;

~ The Smiley Face Balloon Crash, near Lockhart, 30 miles south of Austin, July 30, 2016.

Considering how finite the limits of Almond map are, it is intriguing to note how many of the Boyms' "Buildings of Disaster" are represented on her graph.

Texas School Book Depository, November 22, 1963.

University of Texas Tower, Austin, August 1, 1966.

    Waco, Texas, April 19, 1993.

Oklahoma City Federal Building, April 19, 1995.

    Texas A&M Bonfire Tower, November 8, 1999

Interstate 35 is closely tied to the controversy surrounding the so-called NAFTA superhighway.

"The proposed Trans-Texas Corridor toll-road project included one proposal (TTC-35) to primarily parallel I-35 from the Mexican border up to the Oklahoma border." Source.

Interstate 29 and Interstate 35, described by the Ministry of Transportation for the province of Alberta as the "NAFTA superhighway."

Perhaps we need to watch I-35 a bit more closely.

For example, notice Ardmore, Oklahoma is on I-35. That's the childhood home of James Shelby Downard, which blogger Matt Forney wrote was "a town straight out of a David Lynch movie: wholesome on the outside but hiding deep dark secrets."

Between 1967 and 1972, "The Enema Bandit" (see Michael H. Kenyon) terrorized Norman, Oklahoma (which sits right on I-35).

The I-35 corridor in this part of the country may be "Satan's Parking Lot," after all.

    Another Killing At Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks had another shooting on August 19, 2015. It happened in the 20900 block of I-45, 20931 Gulf Freeway, in Webster, Texas, around 10:28 p.m. Wednesday. Most of the shooting took place in the parking lot.

Law enforcement officers surrounded the Twin Peaks restaurant in Webster after shots were fired during a fight, which left one dead and another wounded. Two groups of people were reportedly involved in the fight, which led to a man pulling out a gun and opening fire.

A mother at the scene said she tried to protect her son and his friend as an argument began.

The shooter fled with two other men. All three were later located in nearby Alvin, Texas, and were taken into custody for questioning.

It will be recalled that nine people were killed Sunday, May 17, 2015, in a shooting among rival motorcycle gang members in Waco, Texas, at a Twin Peaks (so-called) "breastaurant."

The David Lynch series, Twin Peaks, is returning to Showtime in 2016.

7-7-15, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Aquarius, and More

What does it mean? Is it about the date of July 7, 2015?

Certainly, if you follow The X-Files revival news, you might be aware that the official Fox Television publicity machine put the coded message out there, increasing expectations it has to do with the new comeback. The series is scheduled to broadcast its six episodes beginning on Sunday, January 24, 2016, not 7-7-15.

But the buzz is out there.

Does it have anything to do with new X-Files promotional material, or is it a bit deeper than that?

The new installment will reunite Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

As all the news of The X-Files return circulated, so did word come of the upcoming sequel miniseries to the original Twin Peaks television series. The series was announced on October 6, 2014, as a limited series of nine episodes that would premiere on the Showtime cable network in 2016. All scripts were written by original series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost, and Lynch said he would direct, as well. The series was described as revisiting the town of Twin Peaks and its inhabitants twenty-five years after the events of the original series.

On January 12, 2015, it was confirmed that Kyle MacLachlan would reprise the role of Dale Cooper. Four days later, Sheryl Lee and Dana Ashbrook also announced their casting in the 2016 series. They also implied the return of Sherilyn Fenn. Source.

There were rumors that David Duchovny might like to join the Twin Peaks cast too.
David Duchovny, of course, played and will play Special Agent Fox Mulder of the FBI in The X-Files. In the original Twin Peaks Duchovny played
Denise Bryson, formerly Dennis Bryson, a DEA agent who investigates drug allegations against Dale Cooper. Bryson began wearing women's clothing during an undercover operation and found that presenting as a woman made her feel comfortable, revealing that she is a transgender woman. Bryson comes to Twin Peaks when Cooper is accused by the Mounties and the FBI of misfeasance for his handling of the rescue of Audrey Horne from One-Eyed Jack's and the alleged theft of cocaine from an RCMP stakeout. Cooper quickly determines that the "Mountie" accusing him is in fact involved in drug dealing alongside Jean Renault and Hank Jennings. This leads to the stakeout at Dead Dog Farm, during which Denise uses her "feminine side" in order to assist the rescue of Agent Cooper. When required for a sting operation, Bryson dons a man's suit and goes by "Dennis." The character’s binary identity reflects the dualistic leitmotif of the series. Source.
Recent real world news has taken on hints of The X-Files and Twin Peaks.

Nine people were killed Sunday, May 17, 2015, in a shooting among rival motorcycle gang members in Waco, Texas. It would be exactly a month later, on June 17, 2015, that nine would die in Charleston. (See "There's A Storm Coming: Dylann Storm Roof.")

The twilight language unfolding from the May event was deep and dark.

Waco, itself, is steeped in violence and history, of course.

The infamous Waco siege began on February 28, 1993, when the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) attempted to execute a search warrant at the Branch Davidian ranch at Mount Carmel, a property located nine miles east-northeast of Waco, Texas. An exchange of gunfire resulted in the deaths of four agents and six followers of David Koresh (born Vernon Wayne Howell; August 17, 1959 – April 19, 1993).

The subsequent 51-day siege by the Federal Bureau of Investigation ended on April 19th when fire destroyed the Waco compound. Seventy-six people (24 of them British nationals) died in the fire, including more than 20 children, two pregnant women, and Koresh himself.

At which establishment did this new May 17, 2015 violence in Waco occur?

It took place at Twin Peaks, a so-called "breastaurant," like Hooters.

Is there more to this re-birth?

    (Photo : Official X-Files Facebook)

The Hollywood Reporter said that, using social media to its advantage, Fox released via Twitter "the first official image from its highly-anticipated revival. As their television counterparts, a scruffy Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and laid-back Scully (Gillian Anderson) can be seen in the backseat of a green screen-enveloped town car. Chris Carter (I Want To Believe) writer/director also happens to be looking at the monitor." Credit.

David Duchovny has been on television a good deal in 2015. He also starred in Aquarius, about Charles Manson.

So, not surprisingly, Vincent Bugliosi, the Manson prosecutor and Helter Skelter author, died at 80, on Monday, June 8, 2015. Source.

Aquarius premiered on May 28, 2015 with a first season of 13 episodes. NBC announced the order of a second season on June 25, 2015.

7/7/15 is the tenth anniversary of the London bombings.

The 7 July 2005 London bombings (often referred to as 7/7) were a series of coordinated suicide bomb attacks in central London, which targeted civilians using the public transport system during the morning rush hour.

On the morning of Thursday, 7 July 2005, four Islamist men detonated four bombs—three in quick succession aboard London Underground trains across the city and, later, a fourth on a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square. As well as the four bombers, 52 civilians were killed and over 700 more were injured in the attacks, the United Kingdom's worst terrorist incident since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, as well as the country's first ever suicide attack.

London's 7/7 is linked to New York's 9/11, as far as waking up the public to terrorism.

The explosions were caused by homemade organic peroxide-based devices packed into backpacks. The bombings were followed two weeks later by a series of attempted attacks that failed to cause injury or damage.

The terms 7th July, July 7th, and 7/7 (pronounced "Seven-seven") have been widely used in the Western media as a shorthand for the 7 July 2005 bombings on London's transport system. In the Chinese language, this term is used to denote the Battle of Lugou Bridge started on July 7, 1937, marking the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

What of 7/7/77? On July 7, 1977, 12,000 Mexican Police occupied the university in Mexico City, Mexico. They entered the campus of the National University because of a union strike, which the government feared would spread across the whole nation.

On July 7, 1865, right after the end of the American Civil War, four conspirators in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln were hanged. They were George Azterodt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and Mary Surratt, the first woman executed by the United States. (More on these four and the other conspirators can be found here.)

This is the alleged date, July 7, 1947, of the Roswell incident, when there was a supposed crash of an alien spaceship near Roswell in New Mexico. The United States Army Air Forces (and its successor, the U.S. Air Force, after September 1947) covered up the event, according to some ufologists.

The 1994 television movie, Roswell, stars Kyle MacLachlan, Martin Sheen, and Dwight Yoakam. MacLachlan is the lead actor in Twin Peaks.

Perhaps the Roswell anniversary date - part of the mythos of The X-Files - is significant?

    BREAKING UPDATE:

Laurent Flückiger has contacted me (via Twitter, @Fluckskywalker) to inform me that Chris Carter gave the answer behind what 7-7-15 is all about in this French interview (here). Then "@XFilesNews did a great translation" of his interview of Chris Carter:

Well, the online publication "Le Matin" has the scoop for you, straight from Mr. Chris Carter himself. He was interviewed this weekend because of his visit to the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival.
In the interview, Carter was asked:
Fans are excited about a tweet: "X-Files": "7.7.15". This date is tomorrow. What will happen?
This is a promotional date: marks 201 days before the first broadcast of new episodes. During this period, a daily episode will be streamed.
